Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit
Theological Thoughts

Jesus said: "I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven" (Mt 12:31). The blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven. What is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? How do we know if we are guilty of it? Is God unjust in not forgiving us of it?

From the context, I think that Jesus is referring to those Pharisees who are claiming that his power to drive out demons is from Satan. They are saying that Jesus has been sent by the devil. This is not just a matter of them being mistaken either, as this is not the first time that they have made this claim. They have seen Jesus perform many miracles and healings, yet have somehow become convinced in their minds that he is demonic. They are attributing the work of the Holy Spirit to Satan. Now, if someone has reached this state of mind where they mistake Jesus for Satan, I don't think they will ever come to a state where would ask Jesus for forgiveness. I think Jesus' statement here is simply a statement of fact. They will never be forgiven, not because God refuses to forgive, but because they will never want to be forgiven.

So, if you are ever concerned that you have committed the unforgivable sin, don't be. If you are concerned, then your heart is still open enough to God for him to be able to forgive you.

Thank you. I was convinced I committed the unpardonable sin. And I was scared out of my mind. Thank you for the assurance.
