Blind faith
Theological Thoughts

Hebrews 11:1 says: "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for, and certain of what we do not see." Some seem to think that this means that faith is blind - that you must believe regardless of the evidence. But I do not think that this is the biblical view of faith.

I would define faith as believing God on what he has not shown us, on the basis of what he has shown us. By this definition, scientific and historical discoveries actually increase faith, rather than undermine it. As we learn more about what God has done in the world, and what he has done in our lives, we are able to trust him more, just as we are able to trust someone more easily as we learn more about them and spend time with them. And as we come to trust God more and more, we are able to have more faith in him.
