Labour overspent by $400,000
NZ Politics

Labour has overspent their legal limit in the election campaign by $418,603 - a huge amount - and have been referred to the Police by the electoral commission.

David Farrar understands that it relates to all the propoganda put out by the PM's office from taxpayer funds having to be included.

At very least this will give plenty of ammunition for the opposition with Parliament sitting again from next week. At worst it could result in members of Labour's campaign committee being found guilty of a corrupt practice (and consequently kicked out of Parliament if they are MPs).

It makes National's GST stuff-up on its TV advertising look tiny.

Surely this throws the validity of their election victory into question. It sure baffled most of us at the time - suddenly things make a lot more sense. I'm certainly not so comfortable with having a government that has obtained its rule illegally. A government that has corruptly manipulated its citizens in such an incredibly foolish and stupid manner.

I agree with you, but unfortunately the electoral and broadcasting acts provide no scope to toss out an elected government because they overspent. And even more unfortunately, I suspect most people will have forgotten about this by the time of the next election. However, I definately do agree with you. I am not comfortable having a government illegally win an election. Although as I strongly opposed Labour at the last election I am not the most impartial observer....
