Now this really annoys me
NZ Politics

I blogged previously about my opposition to Sue Bradford's bill to criminalise parents who smack their children. I stated that I would support an amendment to section 59 of the Crimes Act to make it clear that it is not a defense for child abuse.

But this is really annoying. Pastor Garnet Milne of Wanganui has claimed that the Greens are a tool of the devil and that people who rejected God were "under the control of Satan" because they interferred with the biblical responsiblity of parents to discipline their children. And of course you can guess the headline the paper has come up with...

The problem here is that Milne has just made any Christians opposing this bill into radical fundamentals who claim that smacking children is their God-given right. It has just become that much more difficult to provide a logical reason why this amendment should not become law, as any argument provided by Christians will be considered in the light of this.

Sue Bradford is also embarking on her own FUD campaign, claiming that Milne is wrong when he states that the bill will outlaw smacking.

Ah, yes it will. It removes the only defense from the Crimes Act that stops parents being prosecuted at present. The police has previously made it clear that if section 59 is repealed, parents can be prosecuted for smacking.
