The NZ Herald reports today that some of the rehabilitation courses offered in New Zealand prisons actually increase the likelihood that participants will reoffend and be sent back to jail. Not very good news when $45.7 million is spent on such programmes every year.
Maybe it would be better to adopt Damien O'Conner's plan to reduce jail numbers - they then wouldn't have the opportunity to do these courses teaching them how to reoffend :-)
The Law and Order select committee is due to decide next week whether to initiate a wide-ranging inquiry into the Department of Corrections. There are 9 members on the committee: 4 Labour, 4 National, and 1 NZ First (Ron Mark). Hopefully Ron Mark will be able to vote freely on this as he has been very critical of the department, and he personally probably is in favour of an inquiry.
