As you may have heard, the US Justice Department has issued a subpoena to Google, AOL, Yahoo, and Microsoft, ordering them to turn over some search logs and a list of indexed web sites for a period last year. The Justice Department claims that they need this information to defend the constitutionality of a internet child protection law that will go to trial later this year.

Apparently AOL, Yahoo, and Microsoft have complied (although very few details are available), but Google is challenging the subpoena in court.

ZDNet has a very good summary of the issues involved for those interested.
