Several interesting Herald articles
NZ Politics

The NZ Herald has several interesting articles today:

First of all, John Armstrong tackles the issue of Labour's pledge cards that were payed for out of the public purse rather than by Labour itself, and which of course they neglected to include in their election expense return. He states that:

"The pledge card - a device designed to increase trust in Labour - has been devalued.

Labour now looks shamefaced. To defuse things, it is deliberately fudging and confusing the separate issues of election overspending and spending of parliamentary funds."

I have already mentioned my support for a change in the law to strongly discourage this behaviour.

The second article is their editorial about TVNZ's recent treatment of Ian Fraser for his testimony to Parliament's Finance and Expenditure Committee. They point out that his evidence is protected by Parliamentary Priviledge, and of course he is obliged to tell the truth or is guilty of a contempt of Parliament. In addition they point out that standing orders state that it is a comtempt of Parliament to intimidate a witness.

The Finance and Expenditure Committee will most likely act to put TVNZ in its place as soon as it meets this week. Rodney Hide, a member of the committee, agrees.
