Speaker to determine if Labour should refund money
NZ Politics

Stuff reports that the Parliamentary Service Commission will investigate Labour's use of the infamous pledge card during the last election campaign. The Speaker, Margaret Wilson (a Labour MP) will then make a ruling on whether or not Labour should repay the money.

Wilson will probably come under a fair amount of pressure to make Labour repay the money, but given her previous rulings, particularly on priviledge matters, I am not terribly confident. Rodney Hide asked her in the House yesterday what involvement she had in the spending and whether she okayed it. The Speaker ducked the questions.

Sir Humphrey has a tongue-in-cheek press release from Labour about the pledge card fiasco. I especially liked this bit:

According to the new advertisement, the Labour Election Pledge Cards, used every election since 1999, to outline Labour's Election Pledges, as signed by Helen Clark whilst she is electioneering, have absolutely nothing to do with the election.
