The crucifixion of Jesus contains many memorable events, and evokes emotive responses. One of the things that really strikes me is Jesus' statement just before he died: "It is finished" (Jn 19:30). Jesus mission to earth was in one sense finished at that point. He had successfully carried the sins of the world so we could be restored to a relationship with God. This is really important to remember when we think about whether we are actually saved.
We should not be looking at our own actions to see if we are worthy of being saved, but we should be looking at Jesus' work on the cross. It is finished. Jesus has already paid the price for our sins, so we now stand before God as holy and righteous. It is finished!
So how we respond to this amazing act of God? We try to be holy and righteous, as he has made us. Not to earn God's favour, or to earn our way into heaven, but as a loving response to the grace that has been shown us.
