Police decide not to prosecute Labour
NZ Politics

Now this is rather ridiculous. The Police have decided to simply issue Labour a warning over their campaign over-spending and lack of authorisation rather than charge them. They found a prima facie case over the lack of authorisation, but insufficient evidence for the over-spending.

As David Farrar points out, this is a weird conclusion for the police to have reached. If the pledge cards needed authorisation then why on earth are they not included as election expenses? The pledge cards would only need authorisation if they were election expenses, so the police position is not logical.

The police for some bizarre reason decided to charge Shane Adern for driving a tractor up Parliament's steps, but have also decided:
  • To not charge Labour for prima facie election law breaches.
  • To not charge Helen Clark for forged paintings despite prima facie breaches.
  • To not charge Pete Hodgson for assault despite a prima facie case.
  • To not charge David Benson-Pope for assault despite a prima facie case.
  • To not charge Helen Clark for securities law breaches (for her advice to hold on to Air New Zealand shares when the government was negotiating buying the airline).
So much for an independent police force.
