Problems with our prison system

The Sundary Star Times has an article today about Rachealle Namana, the woman who killed Wairarapa toddler Hinewaoriki "Lillybing" Karaitiana-Matiaha. She is now out of jail, and talked the paper that in prison she had easy access to P, and had a cellphone on which she regularly downloaded porn.

Now that she is out of jail, she and some other former inmates now regularly donate money to current inmates to help them buy drugs.

Some of this is not a surpirse, but why isn't the Department of Corrections trying to do something about it? How on earth do so many cell phones and drugs get into prisons, and why aren't they found? Probably because it would be an infringment on prisoners' rights to search their rooms too frequently...
