State Housing
NZ Politics

The Press reports that there a number of families earning over $70,000 a year after tax, and yet they are living in state houses. This is ridiculous. There is no way you can count these people as being needy, and yet they are being supported by the government.

There is a massive waiting list for state houses at present (partially due to Labour policy which favours them over private landlords), with most on the list bringing in less than $15,000 per year.

Housing Minister Chris Carter is blaming this on the "bad" housing policies of National in the 1990s. What rubbish. Labour has been in power for 7 years now - you can't still be blaming things like this on the previous government. Especially as Rodney Hide points out, National didn't subsidise state housing like Labour does - they subsidised the income instead, meaning that you got the benefit of it regardless of whether your landlord was the state or a private citizen.
