The French Prime Minister, Dominique de Villepin, is in serious trouble after it has just been revealed that he (on President Chirac's orders) started a secret investigation into possible corruption in 2004 by the then Minister of Finance, Nicolas Sarkozy. Sarkozy is of course his main political rival, despite being in the same party.
The problem with this was that the allegations of corruption were a crude forgery, and it seems that Villepin knew that, by ordered the investigation anyway. It was simply smear tactics to descredit is rival and contender for the presidency.
Several magistrates are now investigating and are expected to raid the Prime Minister's offices over the next few days. Villepin's presidential ambitions seem to be completely over now.
