Reducing the number of MPs
Constitutional Thoughts

No Right Turn has a very well-reasoned submission opposing the bill to reduce the number of MPs. He that reducing the number of MPs without reducing the number of electorates effectively destroys proportional representation (the whole reason for MMP), and reducing the number of electorates would be difficult (the number of South Island electorates and the formula is entrenched) and would create impossibly large electorates.

It would significantly increase the likelihood and impact of overhang seats, which distort proportionality.

Additionally, as MMP was introduced after multiple referendums, one of which was binding and after a lot of publicity about what the options meant, it should not be effectively removed (as this bill would do) without similar circumstances.

I definitely oppose the bill myself, but can understand the Opposition referring it to select committee (it was good politics), but I am pretty certain that it will be ultimately rejected.
