We are definitely short of police officers in New Zealand. While I would like more officers here to solve our crime problems, I do think we have a duty to the pacific nations to help out in times of crisis - I think the Solomon's situation qualifies as such.
Really New Zealand needs to built up its police force and armed forces so we can participate adequately in these situations, while still having sufficient police here. That is where the government is failing - not in its decision to send police to the Solomons, and a criticism of that decision is I think missing the point a bit.
Defense of the realm, and protection of the citizens is one of the primary duties of any government. Our crime rate indicates signficant failures there.[pP]>ruberband man commercial

New Zealand is to be commended for wishing to help a neighbour, but the real culprit is political and economic corruption in Honiara. Until that's fixed, all the policing in the world will be in vain.[pP]>ruberband man commercial
