Radio New Zealand reports that the Engineering, Printing, and Manufacturing Union (EMPU) is planning mass industrial protests unless Wayne Mapp withdraws his members bill to introduce a probation period for new employees. This is rather strange as submissions on the bill have not yet closed, and it is not due to be reported back to the House until September. Andrew Little, the national secretary of the EMPU, has given Wayne Mapp 90 days to withdraw it or face national protests and a march on Parliament.

Wayne Mapp has responded to this saying that the strike threat is ridiculous, and he will not be held to ransom by held. Peter Dunne has also issued a press release slamming the "bully-boy" tactics of the EMPU, and saying the United Future's support for the bill has been "firmed up" because of this protest.
