Baliffs and the Ministry of Justice
New Zealand

A bit of shocking story on Fair Go tonight.

A guy on an invalids benefit lent his car to a friend whose car had broken down. The friend had some unpaid fines and so the Court Baliff came around to seize some goods.

The friend explained to the Baliff that the car wasn't his and wouldn't let him take it. So the Baliff got the local police involved and came back. The police spoke on the phone to the owner and explained that the Baliff had a valid court order to seize it and he should apply to get it back.

The owner attempted multiple times to get in touch with the Baliff, who didn't respond to any of his messages.

The court checked the car registration and found that the owner was correct. However, as they didn't regard this as proof of ownership, they auctioned off the car anyway.

So this guy has had his car stolen by the government, with absolutely no compensation.
