The NZ Herald has an article today outlining various examples of wasted ratepayers money, sourced from Aaron Bhatnagar's rates watch website, including:[pP]>downloads Magic-PS v1.5
- $2500 to help a seance group get NZQA approval for their courses
- $2000 to fund tarot card reading events
- An estimated $5 million on penalty payments when the council failed to consult adequately over removing trees in Queen St
- A $600,000 "investment" into a sustainable housing company, with no return expected
- And many more...
While many of the examples of wasted spending are small items, it is simply unacceptable that the council is embarking on huge rate increases without examining existing spending to ensure that they are get value for money. I have no problem with paying rates for core services - but I object to having to pay for all these other things that are simply not necessary.[pP]>downloads Magic-PS v1.5
As I have said before, rates on property are a really bad way to fund councils, but that does not excuse them from reducing wasted expenditure.[pP]>downloads Magic-PS v1.5
