So says the president of the PPTA in a statement opposing performance pay for teachers. And of course we all know differently. Anyone who has gone through our schooling system can testify that some teachers were simply much better than others. Often by several orders of magnatude.
It just seems wrong that you can have two teachers, one of whom is brilliant at the job and puts in many extra hours in preparation, and another who puts in the minimum possible and is (for lack of a better word) crap, both getting identical pay.
That simply does not happen in most other industries where good performance is rewarded. It appears as though the PPTA want to cater for the lowest common denominator. A lack of performance pay is simply a great way to encourage apathy - it doesn't matter how hard you work, or how good you are, it simply has no bearing on your compensation.
That is simply not good enough. If we want to encourage good teachers, we need to reward excellence - not mediorcrity.
