Currently we are migrating from Exchange to GroupWise for our e-mail and calendar services. The main reason for this appears to be the significantly reduced cost - from what I gather, the licensing model for GroupWise is based on the number of users (you can use as many servers as you want), whereas Exchange is licensed more on the size of the datastore and the number of servers. We had many problems in the past with a large Exchange datastore, and no desire to spend lots of money for additional servers.
However, the migration has caused many problems...
- For a while, all my incoming e-mails lost their contents (I still had the sender and subject, but that was it).
- Most of my calendar appointments were lost - very annoying as many were recurring group meetings with booked resources. I can't rebook the resources and move the meetings, because the meeting still exists - I'm just not invited anymore...
- The GroupWise connector for Outlook is extremely slow.
- The GroupWise client tends to get Reply and Reply To All mixed up. So your private reply to an e-mail may not be as private as you thought.
- Any e-mail groups get screwed up as they flow through the Exchange / GroupWise bridge (still present until the migration is complete).
As you would expect with these problems, it is annoying pretty much everyone coming into contact with it at present. Some of the problems may disappear once the migration is complete, but if they don't we may get to go through the process again in a few months time...
