So blogging has been light again. Last Monday I managed to break a finger playing indoor cricket, which has somewhat curtailed it. My typing speed is slower, but still okay, however, over the last week I have spent a lot of time at various Doctor's clinics and the hospital.
On Tuesday the local doctor did some x-rays and determined that I had a minor break, but just to be sure, I was booked in to see an orthopedic specialist the next day.
I saw the specialist on Wednesday, and he got more x-rays and thought the break was more serious, and so referred me to the hand specialist.
On Friday I saw the hand specialist, who told me to go into hospital on Sunday for a CT scan and possible surgery on my hand, as it looked like the middle joint was munged together. And of course don't eat or drink on Sunday morning in case I had surgery that day.
Sunday was a waste of time - the CT scan didn't happen and so they eventually sent me home.
Today we went in again, and amazingly had the CT scan only 1/2 hour later than it was supposed to happen. I then (much later of course) saw the hand registrar, who showed me the results of the scan (using my company's software of course), and just how badly broken it was - if I can get hold of a copy of it I'll post it as it is quite interesting. Basically the middle joint of my little finger has been somewhat shattered. Most of the joint is out of alignment by a significant distance, except for several other fragments. And of course the ligiments are attached to different fragments, so when I bend my finger, I am pulling the bits apart a little (and hence it hurts). Given how bad it looks, the normal plastics surgeon didn't want to touch it, so I've been sent home again until tomorrow, when one of the two hand surgeons is on.
So at this stage I am booked in for surgery tomorrow, with a probable overnight stay - they claim it is so they can x-ray it again the next day and check it is healing correctly, however, I think it is because it is likely to get delayed until late afternoon, and I'll be in no state to make it home while recovering from the anaesthetic.
Not entirely sure exactly what they're going to do at this stage, as the proposed course of action is to cut open the finger, and then use bone (from my wrist), pins, and/or wire to put everything back together. The pins and wire will make it fun going through the airport security scanners in a few weeks - just as well I'm not going to the States.
